NASH

The Helping Hands Clinic Luna referred me to was a nice place, albeit unexpected. I didn’t know why I’d thought the practice would either be in a hospital or in some fancy office building, but it took me by surprise when I arrived at the renovated warehouse and saw the name of the place I was looking for outside.

When I hobbled in through the large double doors, I was greeted by a bearded, redheaded man who had to be at least a head taller than I was and one and a half times as wide. His face broke into a grin when he saw me, his gaze immediately dropping to my ankle when he noticed my uneven gait.

“I’m Hunter. You must be Nash,” he said in a booming, jovial voice. “The guy Luna called ahead about?”

An easy grin of my own spread on my face. “The one and only.”

He nodded, motioning for me to come right through past the presently unoccupied reception desk. “We can get the paperwork done later. Chris is waiting for you. Apparently, it’s imperative that we get you checked out immediately. Uh, why exactly is it so imperative? You seem mobile enough that it doesn’t look like an emergency. Do you have a big dance contest to win or something?”

I chuckled, liking the guy already. In general, I was a pretty good judge of character and he was one of those I knew I’d happily be able to have a few drinks with.

“It’s not exactly a dance contest, but I’m expected to dance at a wedding in a few days,” I replied. “Not my own, so it’s not really imperative. To be honest, I was perfectly happy keeping it up and iced for now.”

“Let me guess,” he said with a knowing look in his eyes. “The womenfolk insisted you come get checked out? That’s why Luna called and not you?”

“Ding ding ding.”

Another guy came walking toward us once we cleared the reception area. He was tall, blond, and familiar. I stretched out my hand. “Doctor Chris Matthews. That’s why I recognized the name of this place. I couldn’t put my finger on it before.”

He seemed taken aback for a minute, and then he snapped his fingers. “Nash Harris. When Luna called to tell me you were coming in, I thought it was a different guy with the same name. How are you?”

“I’m all good except for this.” I gingerly lifted my foot. “You? I’m assuming those lawyers treated you right?”

“They did.” He smiled, gesturing for me to have a seat on a chair set high enough that a person could easily move in and out of it despite being injured.

Hunter frowned at us, his hand moving between us as he cocked his head. “You two know each other?”

“We met briefly back when I first lodged my patent,” Chris explained. “Nash is a talent agent, but he referred me to the management company I’m still using and set me up with a team of lawyers to get all the contracts in place before we went to market.
